In an organization where there is lack of transparency, the entire appraisal process is an eye-wash. This is the ugly truth.
Middle-management suffers most during appraisal season. Due to lack of clarity from top management, they resort to painfully stretching their budgets to give hikes to a fraction of the workforce. However, they still bear the brunt of star performers who are not given their due, and the rest for getting nothing.
The old adage that if you work hard then you will be rewarded is an incomplete statement when it comes to appraisals. Unless the management is transparent of the revenues and vision, combined with empathetic leadership, there won’t be justified appraisals. This explains why some undeserving people are promoted owing to office politics, while genuinely hardworking employees are left on the sidelines.
Here is a golden rule for hard working staff to remember: If your justifiable performance is not recognized in 2 years, then it is time to move out. The only exception being that your management is transparent of its challenges, and requests your contribution for an extended time, following which your loyalty would be rewarded (in a written commitment).
